Brody
Burroughs - Artist Statement
I
find nothing so fulfilling as working with my hands; they are my
primary means of interaction with the world around me. When I paint,
I construct objects by hand that reflect my life experiences. The
results can be lyrical, narrative, sensual, intellectual, or dramatic.
In this creative process, my hands are aligned with my senses, my
emotions and my logic. The result is a physical object that possesses
a presence of its own and a voice that belongs to me.
Generally, my paintings are investigations of the world around me.
From both participatory and voyeuristic perspectives, I portray
conventional scenes in which people eat, drink, work, and exist
in a particular space, hoping to infect the viewer with the emotional
and analytical response I have to these ordinary situations. In
other more abstract work, recognizable imagery is still present,
but is assembled in a way which strives to catch a fleeting train
of thought or revisit some vague memory. These paintings address
an internal world of visual thinking and feeling.
